“Do you remember before the internet? I do.” – Phong Long
Before the internet came to dominate so much of our daily lives, Phong began his long, unexpected yet fabulous experience with web development. While still a teenager, his older brother helped him find his first client, making web pages for faculty at the USC School of Pharmacy. Soon thereafter, Phong won his first PowerMac in an Apple eWorld Web Design Competition. A random chat over telnet with Mr. Katzman, the school’s computer science teacher, resulted in Phong receiving one of the first email addresses specifically for students in the Los Angeles Unified School District – a prize which also came with free dial-up internet. All of this was before he’d graduated high school.
Phong went on to earn a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of California at San Diego. For their senior project, a tight knit group of engineering friends built a roller coaster inspection robot. Phong designed the electronics and wrote the software.
After college, Phong crisscrossed the country designing photo printers at HP, explosive detectors for the defense industry, audited factories in Shanghai, designed check scanners for the banking industry, and many other things in between.
Working late one January night, Phong came across a video on YouTube about Burning Man. Seven months later, he found himself rolling around on the Playa, igniting a deep desire to reconnect with the physical world and putting him on a quest to sail around the world. Phong and his partner are currently mid journey, trying to find/buy/build/fix-up a sailboat to make their dream a reality.
Though Phong has been fortunate enough to explore anything and everything that piqued his interests, he has never stopped programming. He programs for Quixotic Quest, the website creation company that he founded.
Editor’s Note: This website would not have been possible without the incredible talents of Phong Long. We are so fortunate to have had the opportunity to collaborate with him and highly recommend his skills if you’re in need of programming assistance.
