NIMBY

We are rolling out a campaign to make this move happen for NIMBY. The minimum amount of money we need for moving is $50,000. NIMBY must pay another $30,000 in rent to get up to the end of the lease. Then there are the NIMBY monthly expenses, the actual cost of moving itself, and development costs to get the new space set-up. All things considered $50,000 is a low ball number to get us started - but if we can raise that we know we can pull this off.

If 1,000 people donate $50 - we will reach our goal. Who remembers a Thanksgiving or a Christmas at NIMBY when you had nowhere else to go? An art piece created at NIMBY that gave you “one of those moments” on the playa? A time when Snook helped you with trucking, let you use his tools, gave you the part you were missing, fed you, or helped you out when you needed it? We only need 1,000 of you to step-up and donate. Snook and NIMBY have taken care of far more people than that over the past 5 years.

Download this flyer, post it on your blog, email to your friends, print it and give it to someone who will donate. And lets give props to Rachael for learning photoshop to bring you this flyer and Norville for making the NIMBY logo look so cool on fire.

While we apply for matching funds development grants, private foundation arts grants, and low interest business development loans to see NIMBY through the pending move we need community support to tide us over. If 1,000 people commit $50 to the campaign - NIMBY can do it.

A great thanks to everyone who has hit that PayPal button and made their voice heard. NIMBY only exists to serve the community and especially now it is great to hear the community saying they want NIMBY to keep going.

A number of spaces have been looked at. There are two options, both in Oakland, that would work very well for NIMBY 2.0. The one we are most excited about is huge, has a ton of private outdoor space, loading docks, enough electricity to run anything and everything, and of course those high ceilings that let us build big stuff. Here is just a small glimpse of part of it. (Taken on a phone.)

This space presents a huge array of possibilities; permanent gallery space for large (and small) scale art, permanent performance space, and never-ending shop space and storage capacity. Our imaginations are working over time thinking of all the possibilities. Also, we get a new neighborhood to spruce up and make safe. Snook is already talking about how he wants to landscape the property along the street.

We are meeting with several City of Oakland officials to talk more about the NIMBY relocation later this week. This expansive, blank canvas of a property will be our focus as we move forward in the planning stages. We will continue looking at other properties both to keep our options open and because Rachael loves shopping - especially for big things.

Properties are being scouted, emails sent, plans drawn, and the old shop cleared out. Snook, the founder and manager of NIMBY, is excited about this opportunity for creating a new DIY space. He is seeing this as a chance to set the shop space up as he had always intended - and this time with the full support of the community and city of Oakland behind him. But the relocation of NIMBY will be no small feat. A considerable sum of money must be raised over the next few months to pay the remainder of the existing lease, and for the design, permitting, and building-out the shop space in the new building. Not to mention we have to transport unfathomable sums of crap from the old space to the new. Remember, giant art in the Bay Area doesn’t come from nowhere - it’s built at NIMBY.

As of September 11, 2008 the City of Oakland has regretfully closed the industrial art space known as NIMBY. For the last 5 years NIMBY has been a center of creative collaboration and artistic expression for talented mis-fits.

What happened?

Early morning on September 10th a fire occurred in a studio space in the NIMBY warehouse. An unattended candle that was being used in a digital photography project has been cited at the cause of the fire. Several NIMBY tenants who were working late (or early) attempted to put out the fire themselves, but the fire got out of control. Two calls were made to the Oakland Fire Department - one from the nearby Tork systems, and one from NIMBY brought a quick response. The fire was successfully put out, leaving NIMBY in fair shape and smoke free. Property damage was confined to the studio space where the fire originated and some sky-lights in the buildings roof.

However, the Oakland Fire Department was then obligated to further investigate the cause of the fire and conditions in the shop space. Following the fire NIMBY tenants were ordered to vacate the premises and were only allowed supervised entry to access tools that they needed.

A complete inspection, with representatives from four different city departments, followed on September 11th. The inspectors and fire fighters were too numerous to count and they scrutinized every inch of NIMBY. The inspectors loved everything; the hot rods, the glass blowing, the fire sculptures, the tile work, and the wood working. However, they were aghast that all of these projects were being done in the same space. They hated to shut us down, but couldn’t find any way to legally let us continue.
When they left, they let us know that our only option was to vacate the space and start fresh somewhere else. Jail was an alternative if we chose not to comply. Bringing everything up to code in the current building - ain’t gonna happen.

What next?

The city of Oakland is doing everything they can to support the relocation of NIMBY in Oakland. They want to keep us here and support the arts - but they are going to make sure that we do it to code. We are so pleased to have this unexpected outpouring of city support and we have already looked a number of potential new buildings.

What can you do?

Donate! Funds are needed to support the relocation effort. Even though the city is helping - they won’t be forking over the bucks it takes to move over a thousand tons of bullshit to a new location. So help us.
