Please Donate to NIMBY’s Safety Upgrades Campaign

Donate please

Here at NIMBY we’re always looking for ways to improve, but sometimes once you’ve identified the problem and found the best solution, you can get tripped up on implementing that solution. We’re trying to jump start two of those solutions: improvements to our wood working space and repairs to our forklifts! To that end, we’ve started a GoFundMe campaign!

We’re trying to raise $5000, but if we raise a little bit more than $5000, we sure wouldn’t be sad about it. We’d be extremely grateful. If you have the means to donate, please do and thank you! If you can share the campaign on Facebook, Twitter, or other social media, , we’d love you for it.

With a little help from you, we can continue to make NIMBY the best Maker Space in the Bay Area.

Thank You

NIMBY’s last days in Oakland: Arts incubator makes way for pot grow

NIMBY was founded in 2004 in West Oakland and after renting the East Oakland space for the past 10 years, a marijuana company purchased the East Oakland block and have until October to leave, Snook said. He is moving his operation 300 miles north near the Oregon border where some artists will move there, too, he said.
The artist couple haven’t found an a affordable place to move, yet.

R.I.P. Kevin Manning

It is with great sadness that we write today about the passing of our friend and community member Kevin Manning. Kevin passed away earlier this week from injuries sustained in a hit and run accident while pedicabbing in June.

Kevin was a longtime NIMBY tenant. He was an engineer and an inventor. He worked to develop the Pump Hub, a bicycle wheel hub that would inflate a damaged tire as the wheel spun. Kevin embodied the spirit of NIMBY as a place to make, to try new things, to learn new skills, to create. He had many setbacks while working on the Pump Hub, but he never gave up.

We’ll miss you, Kevin, and hope that you rest in peace.

**The investigation into the hit and run that resulted in Kevin’s death is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to call the SFPD at (415) 575-4444 or Text a Tip to TIP411 and begin the message with SFPD. Footage of the suspect can be seen HERE**

The Future of NIMBY

CC-Art-Park

Dear Makers, Creatives, and friends of the Oakland arts community,
We are inviting you to participate in our vision of a future for NIMBY and the artists that call us home. Talking about the causes of displacement in our community or discussing the political avenues for aid are not going to get us the help we need in the short amount of time we have. We have six months to make magic happen, so we can continue to do what we do best, make magic.

The following details NIMBY’s current situation and the options we have found for staying in the east bay. After reading this, please take the time to donate or leave suggestions. We are very excited about our vision of a future NIMBY where we can keep Oakland and the Arts alive with creative inspirations.

NIMBY is facing a proposed increase of tens of thousands of dollars a month rent increase beginning Jan 1. That boils down to roughly $500.00 more a month for each tenant. We are still in negotiations with our landlord but must be prepared. We are always looking for a new place to call home. After two years of searching we have found two very special places in the east bay.

The first is a 44 acres property that was previously a park with a Ferris wheel (Ferris wheel not included). It is 8 miles from NIMBY’s current location. We would like to buy this property so that we can avoid getting displaced or priced out every economic cycle and continue to provide below market rates. The purchase would require $5,000,000.00. We are looking for loans, co signers, partners, trusts, grants, donations, bake sales, work trades and anything else that can help up meet our goal. Please spread the word and contact us if you can help get us closer to a final purchase.

The second is also a very special location. It is 58 acres, and 4 miles from NIMBY. This would be a long term lease and comes with some complicated hurdles. Although the space itself is incredible it remains a fall back option because the idea of NIMBY owning it’s own space is the goal.

Both spaces are 90% green space and will be used as such, so expect farm animals at NIMBY in the future!

This will not affect the build season and we are hoping for a slow calculated move. I think these spaces, and the reasonable rents will far out weigh the extra drive.
Comments and questions are welcome, but please be assured that we will get more information to you as soon as possible.
Big Thank You
The NIMBY Crew

Adam Savage comes to NIMBY

NIMBY Adam Savage Video

Right about the time we were all exhausted from the summer’s projects and that thing in the desert, Adam Savage rolled in and reminded us why we do it.

Follow Adam as he discovers what NIMBY is all about and meets a few of our artists.

NIMBY @ Burning Man 2017

Black Rock City Map

If you’ve been following NIMBY on Instagram (we hope you are!), then you’ve seen lots of in process shots of the projects, art cars, and art work the Makers at NIMBY have been working on diligently all year. If you’re making your way out to the desert, you can see that art in person, or at least try to… good luck trying to nail down those art car. Congratulations to this years crop of artists and Burners: YOU DID IT! Now have fun and be safe out there, everyone. You can find a larger version of the map below by clicking here!

**Special Note** The names listed are our tenants who may be spearheading efforts or working on the pieces, but they are by no means the ONLY people who made and worked on these projects. It takes a lot of teamwork and coordination to make amazing and large scale art happen, and a lot of projects are being made through work done at various studios, warehouses and design shops before coming together on . If you’d like to reach out to any of the artists for more info, please do!

“Blood” Filming by Faust Productions at NIMBY

Jen Faust of Faust Productions dances during filming for "Triptych: Journey thru Cancer"

This past March, NIMBY was pleased to once again host a fantastic, original dance video project “Triptych: Journey Through Cancer”. As the name implies, “Triptych” is a three part artistic exploration of cancer’s impact on the cycle of life and death. Part one “Dust” was filmed at NIMBY in 2015, and Executive Producer Jen Faust, director Micah Van Hove, and the production team have just released a behind the scenes look at the filming of part two “Blood”. In the video they discuss the creative process involved with such an ambitious project, and a number of cast and crew share how cancer has impacted their family and personal lives.

You can watch “Triptych: BLOOD (Behind the Scenes)” below and part one “DUST” here. Visit Jen’s GoFundMe campaign to learn more about the project and talented cast and crew, and visit be sure to Like the project page on Facebook

“Water” the concluding chapter of “Triptych” is set to be filmed in the spring of 2017 at NIMBY.
