Maker Faire 2015

Howdy, NIMBY-ers, we’re proud to report that our two NIMBY racers, the mini Ferrari and the mini yacht, aka Yachts What Friends Are For, were BIG winners at the Power Racing series at Maker Faire this past weekend. The mini Ferrari sped past the competition to win several races, and the yacht… well… the yacht won hearts and minds but no actual races. Ok, let’s be truthful: it was the slowest vehicle out on the course, but it was the WINNER at being the slowest vehicle in the race. That’s something right?

Check out the photos and videos below. You’ll feel the wind rush through your hair just watching!

Congratulations and thank you to all the racers, makers, builders, and artists who made this year’s Maker Faire such an enjoyable weekend.

The Wedding of Ray Sykes and Diane Gordon

On Saturday, April 4th, NIMBY hosted the wedding of Ray Sykes and Diane Gordon, two of our friends from the Flaming Lotus Girls art collective. Three hundred of their friends and relatives came together from all over the globe (the US, Ireland, Australia and more) to celebrate their commitment to and love for one another, and they brought a few of their favorite things along for the party: flaming cattails, inflatable starbursts, and the epic Serpent Mother sculpture. While the Serpent Mother lit up the night sky, the Extra Action Marching Band made a boisterous, surprise appearance, and everyone in attendance agreed that this was a wedding and party no one would ever forget.

Congratulations, Diane and Ray! We wish you all the best with your new marriage, and we thank you for letting us play a part in your joyous celebration.

Mark’s 60th BDay!

This Saturday we will be celebrating Mark’s 60th birthday.

Every now and then we have to take a special moment to say “Thank You” to those wonderful dedicated people who volunteer their time, energy and sweat to make NIMBY happen. Mark is one of our hardest working, most badass volunteers. Long after the tools have been put away and massive projects have departed the NIMBY yard, Mark will stick around to help clean up, organize and make NIMBY habitable again.

Thanks for what you do, Mark! Happy Birthday, you don’t look a day over 52!

P.S. Mark asked for dancing girls so we’re all wearing dresses. You won’t believe what Dave is going to wear. and if anyone wants to make some music…..

NIMBY Build Season 2014

Pretty sure that last year we said “How did we survive Build Season?”, but seriously, guys… How did we survive this year’s Build Season?!?! From May’s visit by the educational and scientifically mesmerizing Life Size Mouse Trap, followed up immediately by Pre-Compression (awesome party, everyone. Thanks!), and then all of our regular day-to-day building and making for the Playa Party… we’re just a little tired, but WOW! What a summer!

Congratulations to all of our new camps on successfully making out to Burning Man and returning back in one piece: Dr. Brainlove, the Cushy car, Titanic’s End, and the Kazbah pyramid. Excellent work from all of our veteran Burners: Airpusher, BAAAHS (dare we make the pun? … great new head!), Casey Ho and the Perry Ellis, the East Bay Corp with the Alien Siege Machine, Camp Celebration, Sugar Cubes, Pangaea and the Diva Nation, Pipe Dream, Beezus Christ Super Car, Bruce Tomb with Maria Del Camino, Richard Lee with Yurt-tastic, Clody Cates and Gaige Qualmann’s wonderful work with Media Mecca, Matt Wirth with the Tilt-a-Hurl, and Deb Davies who returned from the UK to make the Starway sculpture.

You guys killed it this year. NIMBY wouldn’t be the same without your energy, passion, and creative spirits. Thank you!

NIMBY Build Season 2013

Wow… Did that just happen? Did we actually make it through these past few months? AND get everyone off to the playa for this year’s Burning Man? It’s quite an accomplishment as this was one of the busiest Build Seasons we’ve ever had at NIMBY.

This year’s crop included: Apis the bee car, Airpusher’s air ship, the wonderfully tangled Pipe Dream jungle gym, the colorful Sugar Cubes, the East Bay Corps’ First Helm, Casey Ho’s the Perry Ellis, Deb Davies’ Luma Module, Beezus Christ Super Car, the BAAAHS bus, aka the Big Ass Amazingly Awesome Homosexual Sheep (good job on one of the better Kick Starter videos we’ve seen in a long while), the O2 Tree House, the Cloud 9 vehicle, and the Anostraca ship.

Congratulations to the first timers who survived their first builds, the returning vets who helped guide the newbies, and the volunteers on all the projects. Without your help, none of this would be possible. Have fun out in the desert, everyone! You earned it!
