Mini Maker Faire 2015

NIMBY was proud to participate in the 6th Annual Mini Maker Faire this past Sunday, October 20th at the Park Day School and Studio One space in Oakland. The event draws several thousand people each year and offers a great opportunity for our Makers to take their creations out of the warehouse, introduce them to the public, and hopefully inspire a few minds along the way.

At our outdoor space, Matt Wirth terrorized and delighted participants in the Tilt-A-Hurl standalone carnival ride. Dave Dávila gave kids (and a few adults) the opportunity to ride around the Faire in the mini-boat racer that he and Mr. Wirth put together for the Power Wheels Racing Series at the Maker Faire earlier this year in San Mateo. Snook brought the Rat Fink art car that he put together for this year’s Burning Man. Clody Cates and Gaige Qualmann brought a range of works in metal, leather, and wood. They also demonstrated some metal working skills for the public. William Orr brought down his in process tiny home. NIMBY supporter John Bolero brought a custom painted 1968 Fiat Spider convertible. Inside the Studio One space, several NIMBY newcomers displayed their LED creations. Bobby Cox, Tim Kettering and James Ranovich brought The Sanctuary of Self, a LED wall hacked with a motion capture device. Clay Richardson and Erika Pappas brought their 5 foot tall LED pyramid, an LED coffee table, and a few other creations.

Special thanks to the hardworking organizers of Mini Maker Faire: Sabrina Merlo and Jennifer Pahlka. Putting together a successful event of that size is no easy feat, but you two make it seem easy. Finally a big “Thank You!” to all of our participating Makers and NIMBY Volunteers: Mack Storton, Martin Sweet, Michelle Bert, and Deidre O’Neill.

NIMBY @ Burning Man 2015

Burning Man is just a few weeks away! Are you excited yet? Or are you frantically searching for a ticket? Just to answer the question you’re thinking and emailing us about… NO, we do NOT have any tickets or resources for acquiring tickets. Sorry, you’re on your own, kids.

What we do have a whole lot of (with the saw dust, metal scraps, bruises and sleep deprived brains to prove it), is a bunch of industrious campers and artists, who have been hard at work for months making crazy things, sprucing up art cars, and building their little hearts out. You can find the fine folk who are NIMBY Makers all over the Playa. Use this handy list to mark your map of Black Rock City so you don’t miss a single mesmerizing piece of art. If you have early entry, stop by the camps. They’ll love for stopping by to lend a hand constructing and preparing for the week ahead.

NIMBY’s New Website

Welcome to the new and improved NIMBY website! It was high time for the old website to bow out and a new site, full of awesomeness and other such hyperbolic wonderfulness to take over. We’ve endeavored to really hit the high points of what makes NIMBY so great and then convey that to the world though the internet. We wanted to remain true to the ragtag, scrappy, can-do spirit that you know and love about East Oakland’s biggest and best maker space, but with a fresh coat of paint, a little bit more sparkle, and some magical coding.

We’ve created six areas to help the visitors of our digital domain explore myriad aspects that make NIMBY unique and unlike any other maker space out there. After you’ve taken a look around, let us know what you think! Thanks for supporting NIMBY and all the crazy things we do here. 11 years and counting, folks!

NIMBY Artist Trunk Show

Some of our talented, industrious makers and artists dropped by the office at NIMBY HQ and said, “Hey, mind if we fill up the gallery with awesome, brain exploding art to sell to people?” It took us all of two seconds to say, “Go for it!”

As word spread, the Artist Trunk Show, on May 30th and 31st, quickly became an event where the Makers at NIMBY wanted to add their work. The attendees were delighted by the array of work with several purchasing pieces to beautify their homes and stupefy visitors. Be sure to check out the gallery below for a look at some of the work featured, and don’t hesitate to contact the artists directly.

Painting the Roof

Here at NIMBY, we’re kind of fond of our bodacious logo, which is why you can find it all over this site, our various vehicles, hot panties (we still have some! Email us!) and stickered around town. But every now and then, we just say: BIGGER! So we put it on the roof! With a 100 foot diameter, I’m pretty sure it’s visible from space now… Ok, maybe not THAT big, but you can definitely see it from a plane and on Google Earth.

Special thanks to our project leads Clody Cates and Gaige Qualmann, and a big “You’re awesome! THANK YOU!” to our tenants and volunteers: Mack Storton, Dave Dávila, Ron Baker, Yale Wolf, Michelle Bert, Phong Long and Brandon Lee.

Extra special shout out to our friends at Urban Brothers Painting for the donation of many gallons of paint! You guys are the best.
